To understand the Nakba, or you must also understand Zionism. Zionism is the belief that Jews have an inherent homeland in modern-day Israel/Palestine. This belief is based on a desire for a safe space, as Jews have been persecuted as long as they have been around. However, the ‘safe space’ in question would not allow any other people besides Jews, which means displacing indigenous peoples in the area. It is a belief that many modern day progressive Jews reject, as it is based in colonization and self-righteousness. The Nakba was a forced mass exodus of the native people of the strip of land now known as Israel and Palestine, officially noted as having happened in 1948. Before, during, and after the Shoah, or Holocaust, Jews were promised a homeland in Israel by the UN. The native Arab people protested the UN’s decision, as it divvied up the land unfairly and without input from the people who lived there. This decision was initially made in 1917. The nation of Israel was born of colonization, and very quickly the Arab people were pushed out, forced out of their homes over the course of a few days with little to no warning. Many Palestinians still have the keys to their family houses, as the people who were evacuated were promised a safe return to their homes that never came.
